  16. I had a problem with my TS-830S jumping frequency - about 100 Hz.at a time
  17. and I got lots of replies when I aksed for help.  Ham radio is full of a
  18. bunch of really great folks - no wonder I love this hobby!  For me,
  19. cleaning the FIX button worked (yes, the "FIX" button was broken ;-) ).
  20. I'm posting this to thank everyone, and to help anyone else in the same
  21. situation.  All these suggestions were excellent.

  37. Although I have not seen this problem in a Kenwood, I have seen it in 
  38. Icom and Yaesu- both with the same cause- small single turn variable 
  39. caps. In case of the Yaesu it was a frequency netting cap on a 
  40. heterodyne oscillator- drove me nuts. It occurred randomly and never 
  41. when I had the rig open. A hint from another ham sent me looking in that 
  42. direction. Replaced 2 or 3 and that was the end of it. Hope this helps.

  46. Check the external VFO DIN jack in the rear.  Actually you will need to
  47. check it from the inside.  If you have one, put the matching DIN plug into
  48. the jack and pull it in and out several times.

  50. This is a common problem with the 830.  This jack has a contact which is
  51. shorted WITHOUT a external VFO.  If the contacts get dirty, it will do
  52. exactly as you described.  You might also want to spray a small amount of
  53. contact/electronic solvent on the jack and do the plug in and out as I
  54. mentioned before.

  60. I had what sounds like the same problem with a TS-830S.  Turned out the
  61. switch labeled "FIX" was intermittent.  It is in the path of the voltage
  62. to the VFO and if it has some extra resistance, the frequency would
  63. change.  I tried "Deoxit" and that worked for a while but finally I
  64. jumpered around the switch contact since I never used crystals for
  65. operating.  Try operating the switch many times and see if goes away for
  66. a while.

  70. Sounds like one of the xtal trimmer caps is going bad.   The center
  71. pivot point is getting rusty.  Contact cleaner will fix this for
  72. a month or so but you need a new one.
